Chapter 1
I: The Woodcutter’s Cottage
On Christmas Eve, Tyltyl and Mytyl, the children of a poor woodcutter, are awakened by a bright light. The Fairy Bérylune visits them and gives Tyltyl a magic hat with a diamond that reveals the soul of things. She animates the animals and objects in their cottage, including the Dog, Cat, Bread, Sugar, Fire, Water, and Milk, and introduces Light, who will guide them on a quest for the Blue Bird. After a commotion, the Fairy warns that all who accompany the children will die at the end of the journey, but they must depart immediately as Tyltyl's father awakens.
Chapter 2
At the Fairy's
The Fairy Bérylune transports Tyltyl and Mytyl to her palace, where she helps them dress for their journey. The Cat, Sugar, and Fire conspire against the children's quest to find the Blue Bird, while the Dog remains loyal. The Fairy sends the children to the Land of Memory to visit their deceased grandparents, explaining that the dead live on as long as they are remembered.
Chapter 3
III: The Land of Memory
Tyltyl and Mytyl journey through a dense, misty forest to reach the Land of Memory, where they reunite with their deceased grandparents, Granny Tyl and Grandad Tyl. The children discover that their grandparents are not truly dead but live on in memory, waking whenever the living think of them. Tyltyl finds the old blackbird, which appears blue in this realm, and believes he has captured the Blue Bird. However, upon leaving, the bird turns black, leading to disappointment. Light consoles the children, urging them to love the grey birds they find along the way.
Chapter 4
IV: The Palace of Night
Tyltyl, Mytyl, and their companions journey to the Palace of Night in search of the Blue Bird. The Cat, Tylette, secretly visits Night to plot against the children, persuading Night to frighten them. Tyltyl bravely opens doors releasing Ghosts and Sicknesses, but Night's plan to terrify them into not opening the great door behind which the Blue Bird may be hidden begins to unfold.
Chapter 5
V: The Kingdom of the Future
Light takes Tyltyl and Mytyl to the Kingdom of the Future, a dazzling azure palace where unborn children await their birth. Tyltyl is given a Blue Bird by Light, but as they flee from Time, the bird escapes and vanishes into the sky.
Chapter 6
In the Temple of Light
Tyltyl and Mytyl return to the Temple of Light with Light, reflecting on the lost Blue Bird from the Kingdom of the Future. They find the Animals and Things drunk and disorderly, except for the Cat, who feigns good behavior and gains permission to go out alone, secretly plotting mischief. Light then leads the children through various chambers of light—the Light of the Rich, the Poor, the Poets, the Learned, and the Unknown—before they fall asleep in the room of Black Light.
Chapter 7
VII: The Graveyard
Tyltyl and Mytyl, guided by Light, venture into a graveyard at midnight to find the Blue Bird hidden among the Dead. Despite their terror, Tyltyl turns the diamond, and instead of skeletons, they witness a miraculous transformation: the graves burst into flowers, revealing that death is an illusion and life continues in new forms.
Chapter 8
VIII: The Forest
Tyltyl and Mytyl are lured by the treacherous Cat, Tylette, into the forest at night, where the Trees and Animals hold a trial and sentence the children to death for humanity's wrongs. The Dog, Tylô, tries to protect them but is bound. Light arrives just in time, and Tyltyl turns the diamond to restore peace. The children learn that humans stand alone against the world.
Chapter 9
IX: The Leave-Taking
As the year-long journey ends, Light prepares the children for separation from their magical companions. The Animals and Things, having grown foolish and quarrelsome during their time in Light's temple, bid farewell to Tyltyl and Mytyl with emotional speeches and antics. The Dog desperately begs to stay, while the Cat remains aloof. Light delivers a profound lesson about the eternal nature of all things and promises to watch over them through moonbeams, stars, and kind thoughts. As the clock strikes eight, Light fades away, leaving the children alone at the door of their home.
Chapter 10
X: The Awakening
Tyltyl and Mytyl awaken from their dream to find their home transformed in their eyes. Tyltyl realizes that his dove has turned blue, the very Blue Bird they sought. He gives it to the sick neighbor girl, who is miraculously healed. The children discover that happiness was at home all along, and Tyltyl's newfound generosity and perception make everything seem beautiful.
