Chapter 1
I: Enter Three Hussars
Greta Forzane, an Entertainer in the Change War, introduces herself and the Place, a recuperation station outside space and time. Three Soldiers arrive as hussars: Erich von Hohenwald, a Roman named Mark, and a New Boy named Bruce. Erich and Bruce clash, with Erich calling Bruce a Snake. Greta reflects on the horrors of the Change War and her own role.
Chapter 2
II: A Right-Hand Glove
Bruce Marchant delivers a passionate tirade against the Change War and the Spiders, questioning the value of Resurrection and the morality of their operations. The New Girl, Lili Foster, wins him over by producing a perfectly fitting glove for his bare right hand, breaking the tension. The group debates the nature of the Change War, the Conservation of Reality, and the fate of nations, while Doc has a traumatic flashback to a Nazi salt mine. Lili and Bruce bond over their shared history from World War I.

III: Nine for a Party

IV: SOS from Nowhere
The chapter opens with the group receiving a Spider distress call. Sid identifies the SOS as coming from outside the cosmos, and the team prepares for a pickup despite it being unscheduled. A Door opens, and Kaby, a Lunan named Ilhilihis, and a satyr named Sevensee arrive. Kaby is distraught, reporting the destruction of Crete, and breaks down in grief and rage.

V: Sid Insists on Ghostgirls
Sid enforces a recuperation protocol at the station, pairing soldiers with companions to heal their psychological wounds. The narrator defends the role of Entertainers as nurses and therapists, then shifts to care for Illy, a Lunan, while Erich happily engages with a Ghostgirl. The chapter explores the necessity of companionship and the complex dynamics among the soldiers and staff.

VI: Crete Circa 1300 BC
Kaby reports a devastating defeat at Crete, where Greek ships aided by the Snakes destroyed the Cretan fleet. She describes a harrowing escape through a Door into an Express Room, the death of Benson-Carter, and the discovery that the Snakes may have found a way to attack the Spiders' Places from the Void. She reveals a secret mission from Benson-Carter involving a tactical atomic bomb and a plan for vengeance in northern Egypt, sparking Sid's outrage.

VII: Time to Think
Bruce Marchant takes command of the panicked group after the atomic bomb is revealed, forcing them to confront what the Change War has done to them personally. He delivers a passionate speech about the sweetness and horror of their power, while the others react with fear, shame, and introspection. The chapter explores the psychological toll of their existence and the looming threat of the bomb.

VIII: A Place to Stand
Bruce Marchant delivers a passionate speech to the assembled soldiers, questioning the nature of time, reality, and the cost of the Change War. He argues that the constant manipulation of history is destroying the 'real now' and leading to 'Change Death,' and proposes using time travel for peace and healing rather than war. Erich von Hohenwald challenges him, mocking his idealism and love for Lili, but Bruce stands firm, declaring his intent to carry a peace message to other Places.

IX: A Locked Room
The search for the missing Maintainer intensifies, with the group realizing it has vanished from the Place. Greta and Sid discuss the implications, including the loss of Ghostgirls and the threat of Introversion, as they grapple with the possibility of being stranded in the Void.

X: Motives and Opportunities
The narrator reflects on the oppressive stillness after the group becomes Introverted, likening the lack of Change to being trapped in hardening cement. As the others fidget and argue, the narrator mentally reviews each member's possible motive for disabling the Maintainer, considering Bruce, Erich, Lili, Doc, Beau, Sid, and even herself, before realizing that Bruce must have seen whoever did it.
Chapter 11
XI: The Western Front, 1917
Lili Foster recounts her traumatic past lives and her resurrection by Suzaku, revealing her long-held love for the poet Bruce Marchant. She argues that the Door is now permanently shut, but that this closure offers everyone a chance to create a true future. Erich mocks her speech, but the group is deeply affected.
Chapter 12
XII: A Big Opportunity
Lili proposes that the group is a seed for a new future, isolated from the Spiders and Snakes, and suggests that the Place can sustain them indefinitely. Maud's pregnancy is revealed, leading to a shift in group dynamics. Erich violently opposes Lili's vision, culminating in Bruce punching him. Erich then grabs a bomb from the Stores sector, escalating the tension.
Chapter 13
XIII: The Tiger Is Loose
Erich triggers the bomb, giving the group 29 minutes before the Place is destroyed. He accuses Lili of hiding the Maintainer and Bruce of covering for her. A tense standoff erupts, with Kaby seizing the Minor Maintainer and using heavy gravity to pin Bruce, Beau, Sevensee, and Siddy to the floor. Erich, Mark, and Illy escape the gravity field, while Maud makes a desperate move to grab the Maintainer.
Chapter 14
XIV: “Now Will You Talk?”
Kaby interrogates Lili, slapping her and threatening to use the Invertor to torture her into revealing the location of the Maintainer. Greta, observing from the floor, deduces that Lili inverted the left-hand glove into a right-hand glove using the Invertor, and that the sculpture in the Art Gallery is actually the inverted Major Maintainer. She sneaks into Surgery, inverts the sculpture, and restores the Maintainer to its proper state, saving the day.
Chapter 15
XV: Lord Spider
The Soldiers retrieve the Maintainer and restore the Change Winds, but Sid stages a convincing deception by impersonating a Lord Spider, only to reveal his trick and seize control of the Minor Maintainer. Bruce then disarms the bomb chest, declaring it safe.
Chapter 16
XVI: The Possibility-Binders
The narrator nurses a black eye and a drink while reflecting on Sid's high-handed resolution of the group's problems, the lingering distrust among the team, and her own failure as a detective. Illy reveals a deep philosophical vision of the Change War as an evolutionary process toward fourth-order 'possibility-binders' (Demons), recasting the conflict as a necessary dialectic between Spider and Snake. The chapter ends with the group preparing for the Battle of Alexandria, a song from Erich and Bruce, and the narrator's resigned acceptance of the cosmic picture.
