Key passages
“they shall strip us stark if they suspect we’ve weapons up our sleeves. All I ask is that we are allowed to get out of this without gyves upon our wrists!”
They will search us completely if they think we are armed. I just want to avoid being handcuffed.
Raffles expresses concern about being searched and handcuffed.
“I’ve done a worse thing aboard your ship than any of you know. I have become engaged to be married, and I want to say goodbye!”
I have done something even more serious than you realize: I got engaged, and I need to say farewell.
Raffles uses a false engagement as a pretext to speak with Miss Werner and plan his escape.
“So I’ve let you in at last, Bunny—at last and after all! If you knew how sorry I am. … But you won’t get much—I don’t see why you should get anything at all. Can you forgive me?”
I have finally involved you in this mess, Bunny. I am truly sorry. You may not benefit from this, but can you forgive me?
Raffles apologizes to Bunny for dragging him into the dangerous situation.
“Hold him, Bunny! Hold him tight!”
Grab him, Bunny! Hold him firmly!
Raffles orders Bunny to restrain the mate as he prepares to jump overboard.
