Chapter 1
I: Tantor the Elephant
Tarzan dozes on the back of Tantor the elephant, enjoying the peace of the jungle. Meanwhile, Arab hunters led by Fahd and Motlog, accompanied by the Galla slave Fejjuan, stalk the elephant. They capture Tarzan and bring him to the camp of Sheik Ibn Jad. Tarzan confronts Ibn Jad, accusing him of slave-taking and poaching, and orders him to leave. Ibn Jad refuses and, after a council with his men, decides to have Tarzan secretly killed.
Chapter 2
Comrades of the Wild
Tarzan remains captive in the Arab camp, but his jungle instincts and bond with Tantor the elephant lead to a dramatic rescue. As Ibn Jad plots to have him killed secretly, Tollog attempts murder but is thwarted when Tantor storms the camp, flings Tollog aside, and carries Tarzan to freedom.
Chapter 3
III: The Apes of Toyat
Tarzan, bound and guarded by Tantor, is rescued by the great ape M'walat after three days of captivity. He confronts Toyat, the king ape who hates him, and uses his authority and past deeds to win over the tribe, eventually ranging again with the Mangani.
Chapter 4
Bolgani the Gorilla
Tarzan intervenes to save Bolgani the gorilla from a python and from the hunter Stimbol, forging an unlikely friendship. Meanwhile, tensions between Blake and Stimbol reach a breaking point after Stimbol abuses a porter, leading to a split in their safari.
Chapter 5
V: The Tarmangani
Blake and Stimbol prepare to divide their safari after irreconcilable differences. Stimbol recounts his encounter with Tarzan, who ordered him out of the jungle. Tarzan arrives in camp, speaks with Blake, and asserts his authority over the situation, promising to oversee the division of the safari.
Chapter 6
Ara the Lightning
Tarzan divides the safari, ordering Stimbol out of the jungle while allowing Blake to stay and take pictures. Stimbol, humiliated and vengeful, disobeys Tarzan's orders by hunting an antelope, causing his men to desert him. During a violent storm, Tarzan is struck by lightning and knocked unconscious. Stimbol finds him and attempts to kill him with a knife, but Bolgani the gorilla intervenes, stopping the attack. Tarzan awakens and spares Stimbol, then leaves him to fend for himself.
Chapter 7
The Cross
Jim Blake, separated from his safari while hunting lion photographs, is struck by lightning and loses his rifle and camera. Stranded and lost, he wanders for two days through the forest, surviving a leopard attack. On the third day he emerges at a mountain range and follows a stream into a canyon, where he encounters a massive ancient limestone cross. Despite a sense of menace, he passes it and is immediately captured by two armed negroes wearing crusader-style crosses and armor.
Chapter 8
The Snake Strikes
Wilbur Stimbol, lost and starving in the jungle, stumbles into the camp of Sheik Ibn Jad. Fahd Ibn Jad saves him from execution and cultivates him for ransom. Meanwhile, Fahd's jealousy of Zeyd's courtship of Ateja leads him to frame Zeyd for an attempted assassination of the sheik. Zeyd is condemned to death, but Ateja frees him in the night, providing food and his musket.
Chapter 9
Sir Richard
Blake is brought before Prince Gobred in the court of Nimmr, where his claims of being a Knight Templar from New York are met with suspicion, particularly from Sir Malud. Sir Richard vouches for Blake, and after a meal, they ride to the castle. Blake is astonished by the medieval setting and is eventually taken before Sir Richard, who acts as Keeper of the Gate, leading to a confrontation about Blake's identity and the reality of the Saracen siege.
Chapter 10
X: The Return of Ulala
Tarzan saves Zeyd from a lion attack and learns of Zeyd's escape from Ibn Jad's camp after being framed by Fahd. Meanwhile, Ibn Jad searches for the fabled city of Nimmr, and Fejjuan is sent to make contact with the Galla people. Ateja discovers Fahd's treachery through Fejjuan's testimony.
Chapter 11
XI: Sir James
Tarzan journeys with Zeyd, who asks to remain in a village to await Ibn Jad's return and protect Ateja. Tarzan agrees and then heads north, concerned about a European prisoner reported among the Arabs. He encounters the apes of Toyat, hunts with them, and later learns from monkeys that strange black men with guns are nearby. He finds Blake's abandoned safari and learns that Blake disappeared after a storm. Tarzan sends a message to summon the Waziri. Meanwhile, in Nimmr, Blake is being trained as a knight under Sir Richard's tutelage, learning sword and lance skills while facing skepticism from Prince Gobred and antagonism from Sir Malud.
Chapter 12
XII: “Tomorrow Thou Diest!”
Tarzan tracks the Beduins, believing Blake is their prisoner. Meanwhile, Blake prepares for a deadly duel with Sir Malud, who is jealous of Blake's relationship with Princess Guinalda. Batando plans to lead the Beduins into the forbidden valley, from which no one returns. Fejjuan relays Batando's terms to Ibn Jad, who reluctantly agrees to free the Galla slaves.
Chapter 13
In the Beyt of Zeyd
Tarzan confronts Ibn Jad and his party, accusing them of lying about their intentions to leave his country. He reveals that he has encountered Zeyd, who exposed Ibn Jad's plot to sack a city and steal treasure. Ateja, grateful for Tarzan's rescue of her lover Zeyd, tries to warn Tarzan of a planned assassination but is intercepted by Tollog. Meanwhile, Stimbol, terrified of Tarzan, is goaded by Ibn Jad into attempting to murder the ape-man in his sleep.
Chapter 14
XIV: Sword and Buckler
Blake faces Sir Malud in a tournament duel in Nimmr. Discarding his buckler as cumbersome, he uses superior horsemanship and unconventional swordplay to wound Malud multiple times, disarm him, and finally knock him unconscious. Rather than kill his foe, Blake spares Malud, earning the applause of the crowd and the approval of Prince Gobred and Princess Guinalda.
Chapter 15
XV: The Lonely Grave
Stimbol murders Tarzan in his sleep, believing he is killing the ape-man. Ibn Jad publicly condemns Stimbol and has Tarzan's body buried in a shallow, unmarked grave. Fahd secretly offers to save Stimbol in exchange for a huge ransom. Ibn Jad then negotiates with the Galla chief Batando to enter the forbidden valley, surrendering his Galla slaves and marching into the mountains toward the Valley of the Sepulcher.
Chapter 16
The Great Tourney
The chapter describes the Great Tourney between the Knights of Nimmr and the Knights of the Sepulcher, a centuries-old tradition that combines martial competition with a prize of five maidens. Blake, now known as Sir James, participates in sword and buckler contests, and his personal feelings for Princess Guinalda create tension. Despite her initial rebuff, he declares his love, and she gives him a ribbon as a favor, though she accuses him of lying about his intentions.
Chapter 17
The Saracens!
Ibn Jad and his Beduins discover the pass into the Valley of the Sepulcher and launch a surprise attack on the outer barbican and castle of King Bohun. Exploiting centuries of lax vigilance, they overcome the defenders with their matchlocks, seize the castle, and plunder its treasure. Sir Bulland, the marshal, is killed by gunfire, and Ibn Jad, now holding the castle, plans to explore the valley further toward the city of Nimmr.
Chapter 18
XVIII: The Black Knight
The Great Tourney reaches its climax as Blake, the Black Knight of Nimmr, defeats Sir Guy of the Sepulcher but spares his life, winning admiration and confusion. Despite a narrow lead, Nimmr wins the tourney by two points. As the victors claim the prize, a knight in leopard skin bassinet enters the stands and Princess Guinalda is kidnapped.
Chapter 19
Lord Tarzan
Tarzan, having killed Tollog in retaliation for the plot against Stimbol, resumes his quest for Blake. Following Blake's trail for days, he discovers the hidden entrance to Nimmr, where he encounters Sir Bertram. After proving himself a friend of Sir James Blake, Tarzan is welcomed, given knightly attire, and rides with Bertram to the tourney, arriving just as King Bohun kidnaps Princess Guinalda. Tarzan joins Bertram in pursuit.
Chapter 20
XX: "I Love You!"
Tarzan jousts with a Knight of the Sepulcher, defeating him with a spear throw, then discards his armor to pursue Blake. Blake and Guinalda are ambushed by Ibn Jad and his Arabs, who feign friendship before capturing them both.
Chapter 21
XXI: “For Every Jewel a Drop of Blood!”
Ibn Jad and his party flee northward with Princess Guinalda and the treasure, but are pursued by Tarzan, who uses psychological warfare to terrorize the Arabs. Fahd attempts to poison Ibn Jad but is thwarted by Ateja, then later steals Guinalda. Tarzan, believing the Arabs think him dead, begins a campaign of terror, killing a treasure-bearer with an arrow and later throwing the man's severed head into camp, all while intoning 'For every jewel a drop of blood!' He interrogates Ateja, learning that Fahd has taken Guinalda.
Chapter 22
XXII: Bride of the Ape
Blake is freed from his dungeon by Sir Wildred and Sir Guy, who help him escape the castle of the Knights of the Sepulcher. Meanwhile, Princess Guinalda, Fahd Ibn Jad, and Nasrany Stimbol, starving and desperate, encounter the ape tribe of Toyat. Fahd shoots a young ape, provoking the bulls to attack. Toyat claims Guinalda as his 'she' and flees with her into the jungle, pursued by the rival ape Go-yad. A lion interrupts the ensuing duel, causing both apes to flee, and the lion approaches the unconscious princess.
Chapter 23
Jad-Bal-Ja
Tarzan rescues Princess Guinalda from the golden lion Jad-bal-ja, whom he raised from cubhood, and learns of her love for Blake. Meanwhile, Zeyd kills Fahd upon discovering his lies about Ateja, and the Waziri march northward. Tarzan later finds Guinalda unharmed and reunites with her, promising to search for Blake.
Chapter 24
XXIV: Where Trails Met
Blake finds Stimbol wounded and learns of Princess Guinalda's supposed death. The Waziri arrive, and later Ibn Jad and his Arabs are captured. Tarzan reveals Guinalda is alive, and Blake decides to return to Nimmr to be with her. Stimbol is taken for care, and the treasure is secured.
