Chapter 1

The candidates are assigned to quarters, take the Academy oath, and Tom, Astro, and Philip Morgan are assigned to Section 42-D.

The Polaris
Tom, Roger, and Astro are awarded the Polaris, the newest and fastest ship in space, and after exploring it, they take it on its maiden voyage under Captain Strong's supervision, successfully landing back at the Academy spaceport.
Chapter 10
The Mercuryball Semifinal
The Polaris unit (Tom, Astro, and Roger) competes in the semifinal round of the mercuryball tournament against the Arcturus unit. Despite internal tension—Roger's selfish play and refusal to pass—the team manages to win with a lucky final roll. During the intermission, Captain Strong, Dr. Dale, and Commander Walters discuss the upcoming final against the Capella unit, noting Roger's attitude. The final game begins with the Polaris unit facing Capella.
Chapter 11
Atom City
The Polaris crew enjoys their first leave in Atom City, meeting a wistful Mr. Bernard who shares his unfulfilled dream of becoming a spaceman. Roger's strange behavior at dinner puzzles Tom. After arriving in the dazzling crystal city, the cadets check into the Mars Hotel, explore the sights, and encounter a belligerent passenger captain. Their leave is cut short by Captain Strong, who orders them back to the Academy for emergency space maneuvers.

The Polaris crew responds to an SOS from the passenger ship Lady Venus, which has suffered a power-deck failure with radiation leaking around a baffle. Captain Strong leads Tom, Roger, and Astro in preparing emergency equipment and jet boats to board the stricken vessel.

Aboard the stricken passenger ship Lady Venus, Captain Strong, Tom, Roger, and Astro coordinate the evacuation of passengers and crew as the ship's reaction chamber threatens to explode. Tom organizes the evacuation alphabetically, Roger entertains the frightened passengers, and Astro goes missing—later discovered to be on the power deck attempting to save the ship. Strong must decide whether to order the cadets back to safety or allow them to stay and search for Astro.

Tom Corbett, with Astro and Roger Manning, works to save the passenger ship Lady Venus from a dangerously overheating rocket tube. Tom devises a plan to climb inside the tube and cut away the cleats holding the assembly, allowing the entire malfunctioning unit to be jettisoned. Despite Roger's sarcastic protests and the high radiation risk, the three cadets cooperate to execute the plan, successfully dumping the tube and cooling the reactor. After filing through the hatch hinges, they discover the sand is deep but find an alternate route through a hatch near the jet-boat deck. Astro crawls through a hose-supplied tunnel, followed by Tom, and they pull Roger up. Reunited, they dismantle a window port on the control deck and emerge onto the desert surface, only to find the ship nearly buried in sand.

Descent into the New Sahara
The Polaris unit—Tom, Roger, and Astro—endures the brutal heat of the Martian desert after crash-landing. They ration water, shelter under space cloth, and survive their first twenty-four hours. Facing the choice of waiting for rescue or marching 150 miles to a canal, they decide to move at night. After eight days of grueling desert survival, Tom, Roger, and Astro face their final crisis when Roger collapses from dehydration.
