Chapter 1
The Beautiful People
Mary Cuberle is brought by her mother to see Dr. Hortel because she refuses the Transformation, a societal procedure that makes everyone beautiful and uniform. Despite psychological tests showing she is sane, Mary insists she prefers her natural body. The conflict escalates to a public hearing where a petition forces her to undergo the Transformation against her will. In the Transformation Parlor, Mary realizes that the beautiful people have lost their true selves, and she is forced to begin the process.
Chapter 2
Elegy
Captain Webber and his crew confront Mr. Greypoole on the asteroid Happy Glades, a preserved cemetery for the dead. Greypoole reveals the asteroid is a perfect replica of Earthly life, maintained by machines and a sealing film. The crew, seeking refuge from Earth's wars, is poisoned by wine and transformed into permanent exhibits by the Eternifier, becoming part of the static tableau.
Chapter 3
Traumerei
Henry Ritchie and Max Kaplan await the midnight execution of a young murderer who claims that the entire world is merely his dream. As the clock ticks toward the fatal hour, Kaplan recounts his visit with the prisoner, whose bizarre and unsettling story challenges their understanding of reality, punishment, and the nature of existence.
