What happens

The narrator and Proskuróf arrive at the Hollow to investigate a murder. The body of a man lies under a linen cover, with a slain horse nearby. The inspector Bezrýlof arrives and, upon uncovering the body, reveals horrific stab wounds. Bezrýlof shows signs of distress and attempts to postpone the description, but Proskuróf insists on proceeding and mentions a prisoner, startling Bezrýlof.
