Taras Bulba, a fierce Cossack colonel, returns from the Setch to his home and decides to send his sons, Ostap and Andrii, to the Zaporozhian Setch for military training. After a brief reunion with their mother, the three depart. At the Setch, Taras conspires with the Koschevoi to break the peace and launch a campaign against the Poles. They besiege the city of Dubno, where Andrii, lured by the memory of a beautiful Polish girl he met in Kiev, betrays the Cossacks by sneaking into the city through a secret tunnel to join her. During the siege, the Cossacks learn of a Tatar raid on the Setch, causing a split in the army. In the ensuing battle, Taras is wounded and captured by the Poles, but later escapes and raises a massive army for revenge against the Poles.
