What happens
Lieutenant Lanark and his troopers encounter the gaunt and sinister Persil Mandifer, who claims responsibility for the mysterious death of the sentry Newton. Mandifer's stepdaughter Enid, whom the soldiers rescued, defies him, leading to a confrontation. Mandifer is arrested after his son is shot by Sergeant Jager, but he warns of an impending attack. The chapter ends with Quantrill's guerrillas charging the camp.
