The Spectre Lovers explained

What happens

Peter Brien, a young idler living with his grandmother Ally Moran, stumbles home drunk late one night and sees ghostly visions from the past: white cabins, a phantom regiment of the Royal Irish, and a ruined house where he encounters spectral figures. His grandmother identifies the ghostly officer as old Colonel Grimshaw, and later, Major Vandeleur's mother reveals the house belonged to the wicked Captain Devereux, who ruined a young woman and died in a duel. Peter becomes obsessed with finding treasure in the ruins, but dies after a fall while climbing the walls.
