Kuranes, a lonely dreamer in London, escapes into his dreams where he discovers the magnificent city of Celephaïs in the Valley of Ooth-Nargai.

What happens

Kuranes, a lonely dreamer in London, escapes into his dreams where he discovers the magnificent city of Celephaïs in the Valley of Ooth-Nargai. After years of searching, he is finally taken there by a knightly cortege and appointed its chief god forever.

Themes in this chapter

  • Dreams vs. Reality

Kuranes prefers his dream world of Celephaïs over the bleak reality of London, and ultimately reality is subsumed by dream.

  • Alienation and Otherness

Kuranes is isolated in London, the last of his family, and finds solace only in his dreams.

Characters to notice

  • Kuranes

The protagonist, a dreamer who seeks the city of Celephaïs and ultimately becomes its chief god.

  • Athib

The captain who sails Kuranes toward Serannian, the pink marble city of the clouds.

Key passages

  • In a dream Kuranes saw the city in the valley, and the seacoast beyond, and the snowy peak overlooking the sea, and the gaily painted galleys that sail out of the harbour toward distant regions where the sea meets the sky.

Kuranes first glimpses Celephaïs in a dream, with its valley, coast, snowy mountain, and colorful ships sailing toward the horizon.

Introduces the dream city and its key features.

  • Kuranes was not modern, and did not think like others who wrote. Whilst they strove to strip from life its embroidered robes of myth, and to show in naked ugliness the foul thing that is reality, Kuranes sought for beauty alone.

Unlike contemporary writers who focused on harsh reality, Kuranes pursued beauty through fantasy and illusion.

Highlights the theme of dreams vs. reality and Kuranes' artistic philosophy.

  • Then they gave Kuranes a horse and placed him at the head of the cavalcade, and all rode majestically through the downs of Surrey and onward toward the region where Kuranes and his ancestors were born.

The knights from Celephaïs give Kuranes a horse and lead him back through time to his ancestral home.

Climactic moment where dream and reality merge, leading to Kuranes' apotheosis.
