What happens

Duane commandeers the spaceship Cameroon, forcing the captain to launch despite the risk to those below. He destroys the controls to prevent pursuit by patrol rockets, but Andrias and guards board the ship. A confrontation ensues, and Duane is shot down by a woman who sides with Andrias, as chaos erupts around them.

Themes in this chapter

  • Power and Corruption

Duane's desperate seizure of the ship and destruction of controls illustrates the corrupting influence of power and the lengths one will go to maintain control.

  • Survival and Adaptation

Duane adapts to his amnesia and the immediate threat, using quick thinking and violence to survive the pursuit and confrontation.

Characters to notice

  • Peter Duane

Takes control of the Cameroon, destroys the ship's controls, and faces Andrias in a standoff before being shot.

  • Mr. Andrias

Boards the Cameroon with guards, confronts Duane, and is present when Duane is shot.

  • the captain

Captain of the Cameroon, forced by Duane to launch the ship and later watches the confrontation.

  • Gala Tropile

Runs into the control room, distracts Duane, and enables Andrias to shoot him.

Key passages

  • Now the ship was crippled, for the time being at least. Short of a nigh-impossible boarding in space, the two patrol cruisers could do nothing with it till the controls were repaired.

Duane disabled the ship's controls, making it impossible for the patrol cruisers to interfere unless they boarded in space.

Duane's sabotage buys him time to think.

  • The acceleration was worse than Peter's clouded mind had expected, but no more than he could stand. In his frame of mind, he could stand almost anything, he thought—short of instant annihilation!

The takeoff was harsh but bearable for Duane, who felt he could endure anything except immediate death.

    Duane's resilience under pressure.
