Nick Adams, thrown from a freight train by a brakeman, walks along the tracks through a swamp and comes upon a campfire where he meets a former prizefighter, Ad Francis, and his companion, Bugs. After sharing a meal, Ad becomes hostile and Bugs knocks him unconscious to protect Nick. Bugs explains Ad's history of brain damage from beatings and a scandalous marriage to his sister-manager, then politely asks Nick to leave. Nick continues on toward Mancelona.
