The narrator visits a private madhouse in southern France, where the superintendent, Monsieur Maillard, explains his former 'soothing system' of treating lunatics by indulging their fancies. The narrator later discovers that the patients have overthrown the keepers and assumed control, tarring and feathering the staff. Maillard himself had gone mad and become a patient, and the 'soothing system' has been abandoned for a harsher regimen.
