Key passages

  • the pit, whose horrors had been destined for so bold a recusant as myself—the pit, typical of hell, and regarded by rumor as the Ultima Thule of all their punishments.

The pit, a symbol of hell and the ultimate punishment, was meant for me, a defiant heretic.

The narrator describes the pit as the worst possible fate, reserved for the most stubborn prisoners.

  • Inch by inch—line by line—with a descent only appreciable at intervals that seemed ages—down and still down it came!

  • I put forward my arm, and shuddered to find that I had fallen at the very brink of a circular pit, whose extent, of course, I had no means of ascertaining at the moment.

I reached out my arm and was horrified to discover I had fallen right at the edge of a circular pit, whose size I could not determine.

The narrator narrowly avoids falling into the pit, a key moment of peril.

  • The agony of suspense grew at length intolerable, and I cautiously moved forward, with my arms extended, and my eyes straining from their sockets, in the hope of catching some faint ray of light.

The unbearable suspense drove me to move forward cautiously, arms outstretched and eyes wide, hoping to see any glimmer of light.

The narrator's desperation leads him to explore the dark dungeon despite his fear.
