Chapter 1
I Decay
Ross, a trader on Halsey's Planet, is troubled by a pervasive sense of decay as he walks through the growing Ghost Town to work. He grapples with a decision to quit his monotonous job at the Oldham Trading Corporation. During lunch with Marconi, Ross expresses his unease about the planet's decline, the mysterious disappearance of advanced technology, and the lack of answers. Marconi deflects his questions about longliners. Ross receives an urgent message about an incoming interstellar spacecraft, and Marconi reacts with unease, hinting at hidden knowledge.
Chapter 2

Ross reflects on his stagnant life on Halsey's Planet, considering a purser's job to escape but finding no real hope. He attends an auction for Oldham Trading, then visits a longliner crew whose members are naked, cheerful, and disturbingly naive. They reveal their practice of using 'the box' to dispose of excess newborns, a method Marconi defends as necessary for survival. Ross reports to his boss Charles Oldham IV, who erupts in a rare display of despair over the planet's economic decline, mirroring Ross's own fears.
Chapter 3
III
Marconi wakes Ross and offers him a space job bigger than being a purser. They drive through Ghost Town to the spaceport, where Marconi leads Ross to the longliner. Inside, Marconi brings Ross to Haarland, who reveals that the longliner's log shows six inhabited planets have gone silent, suggesting decay. Haarland offers Ross a vital mission to investigate, and they blast off immediately.

IV
Ross completes his training under Haarland on the Wesley Drive and the F.T.L. ship, then receives a final briefing. Haarland reveals the mission's deeper purpose: to investigate a mysterious genetic formula passed down by Wesley families, and warns that faster-than-light travel could make interstellar war possible. Ross sets off alone.
Chapter 5
V
Ross lands on Gemser, expecting a civilized world, but is immediately captured and subjected to a bizarre, infantilizing society where elders rule through electric shock rods. He is placed in a 'Junior Unit' with others his apparent age, forced into labor and strict obedience. He learns the social structure from Helena, a fellow inmate, and attempts to navigate the system by manipulating the foreman, Dobermann, but his efforts to fix a broken vat backfire, leading to punishment. A fight breaks out between the juniors and older members, stopped by a decrepit minister, revealing the deep generational conflict.
Chapter 6
Holiday
Ross experiences the planet's Holiday, witnessing the ceremony where Dobermann becomes a Scholar and observing the oppressive age hierarchy. He learns about the voting process, which is rigged to favor the oldest candidates, and participates in the chaotic, manipulated election of Immanuel Appleby.
Chapter 7
VII
Ross and Helena arrive on Azor and attempt to secure help from Miss Cavallo, the head of Cavallo Machine-Tool Company. Ross's plea about the danger to humanity is dismissed, and he is threatened with imprisonment on Minerva. That night, Pilot Breuer takes Helena out, then drunkenly tries to seduce Ross, leading to a confrontation when Helena returns. The next day, they fly to Novj Grad, where Ross is left alone in the ship while Helena and the pilot eat, and he learns from a young male worker about the planet's reversed gender roles.
Chapter 8
VIII
Ross, imprisoned on Azor, bitterly reflects on the failure of the F.T.L. secret across various worlds and his growing concern for Helena, who faces execution. He frantically writes instructions for her to pilot his ship to Halsey's Planet, though he doubts her ability. In court, a judge lectures a couple on marriage. Later, Ross and Helena draw a hostile crowd on the street when Helena disparages 'women,' but a cook named Willie rescues them, and a virago is appeased by Helena's flattery.
Chapter 9
IX
Ross and Bernie are imprisoned on the prison asteroid Minerva, where they are put to work on a pointless construction/demolition cycle. Ross learns from the ancient prisoner Whitker that Flarney, before his death, spoke of a formula and insisted that Earth holds the answers. Despite the apparent impossibility of escape, Ross decides to head for Earth, the enigmatic homeworld from which no faster-than-light ship has ever returned.
Chapter 10
Landing on Earth and Encounter with the Joneses
Ross, Helena, and Bernie land their starship on a strange version of Earth, where the atmosphere contains neon instead of nitrogen and gravity is off by ten percent. They are captured by a man named Ben Jones, who takes them to a Jones compound. Helena tells their story to a group of Joneses, who verify they are not Peepeece agents. Ben Jones reluctantly agrees to feed them, and Ross later persuades a doctor to help him access records about the War of the Joneses.
Chapter 11
XI
Ross and the doctor travel through a restricted area to reach a museum, where Ross discovers historical records revealing the origin of the Joneses and the genetic formula L_T = L_0 e^{-T/2N}. He realizes the planets are losing genetic diversity, leading to societal decay, and that Earth is not what he expected.
Chapter 12
XII
Ross, Helena, and Bernie land on a technologically advanced Earth, but are bewildered by its chaotic, advertising-saturated culture. After a confusing ride and a party where Ross's attempts to explain his mission fail, they deliberately cause a disturbance to get arrested, hoping to reach the authorities. Instead, the police release them, and they resort to begging.
Chapter 13
XIII
Ross descends into a hedonistic haze of endless parties on Earth, losing track of time and purpose. Helena and Bernie, frustrated by his inaction, decide to leave him and return to Halsey's Planet to seek Haarland's help. Ross sobers up, realizes his mistake, and encounters Doc Jones. Together, they decide to appear on a bizarre radio advice program called 'What's Biting You' in a desperate attempt to find answers about the blue lights and the hidden intelligences of Earth.
Chapter 14
XIV
Ross and Doc Jones are taken to a hidden base in Australia where they meet the planet's true masters—super-intelligent beings who have secretly guided humanity. These beings explain their tragic role: they are prisoners of Earth, forced to watch over the 'children' (the ordinary humans) who cannot leave the planet. Ross realizes that humanity's isolation has led to genetic stagnation, and he declares a mission to crack the walls between worlds, using FTL ships to mix genes and restore hybrid vigor. He returns to his ship and sets course for Halsey's Planet to bring Haarland the answer.
