What happens
Sanine casually informs Ivanoff that he has been challenged to a duel by Sarudine, but refuses to participate. Later, while strolling with Ivanoff and Soloveitchik in the public garden, they encounter Sarudine, who confronts Sanine about the challenge. When Sarudine threatens him with a riding-whip, Sanine strikes him in the face, causing a violent and bloody scene that horrifies the onlookers, including Sina Karsavina and Yourii Svarogitsch.
