Red Harvest
The narrator, a detective from the Continental Op, arrives in the corrupt mining town of Personville, also known as Poisonville, and is drawn into a web of violence, deception, and power struggles after being hired by the local newspaper owner.
Chapter 3
I: A Woman in Green and a Man in Gray
The narrator arrives in Personville, a grim mining town, and meets Donald Willsson's wife at his home. After a tense wait, Mrs. Willsson leaves abruptly and returns with blood on her slipper. The narrator later learns Donald Willsson has been murdered, and begins to uncover the town's corrupt power structure through a conversation with Bill Quint.
Chapter 4
II: The Czar of Poisonville
The narrator reads about Donald Willsson's murder in the Morning Herald, then spots Whisper Thaler entering the victim's house and decides to visit Elihu Willsson instead. He meets the old man, who blames his daughter-in-law for the murder and refuses to consider political motives. The narrator later interviews Donald's secretary, who reveals the strained relationship between father and son over the reform campaign.

The narrator investigates Dinah Brand, the recipient of a $5,000 check from the murdered Donald Willsson. VII: That’s Why I Sewed You Up
The narrator secures a certified check from Elihu Willsson, then confronts young Albury at the bank, forcing a confession that Albury killed Donald Willsson out of jealousy over Dinah Brand. The narrator reveals his plan to use the money to expose corruption in Poisonville, defying Elihu's attempts to control the situation.

VIII: A Tip on Kid Cooper
The narrator writes reports, then receives a call from Dinah Brand asking him to visit Max Thaler. After dinner, he is shot at in his hotel room. He moves rooms and goes to Dinah's apartment, where Thaler warns him to leave Poisonville, but the narrator refuses, declaring his intent to even the score with Noonan and the city. Thaler gives a tip on the upcoming fight: Kid Cooper will knock out Ike Bush in the sixth round.

IX: A Black Knife
The Narrator spreads a rumor that Ike Bush will take a dive in the fight, manipulating the betting odds. He meets Bob MacSwain, who reveals that Ike Bush is actually Al Kennedy, wanted for a robbery in Philadelphia. At the fight, the Narrator warns Dinah Brand that the dive is off, and she bets on Bush. Bush initially appears to be losing but then knocks out Cooper. Immediately after, a black knife is thrown from the balcony, killing Bush.

X: Crime Wanted—Male or Female
The narrator leaves a building and finds Dinah Brand and Max Thaler in a tense confrontation. Dinah drives the narrator to a Chinese restaurant, then to her house, where Dan Rolff is present. Dinah reveals she profited from the fixed fight, angering Thaler. The narrator proposes using Elihu Willsson's money to clean up Poisonville, and Dinah agrees to help. Rolff objects, leading to a violent altercation where Dinah slaps him and he shoots at the narrator, who knocks him out. XI: The Swell Spoon
Dinah Brand reveals to the narrator that Max Thaler (Whisper) murdered Tim Noonan, the brother of Police Chief Noonan, at Mock Lake two years earlier. She recounts the events in detail, describing how Myrtle Jennison witnessed the murder and heard Tim's dying accusation. Dinah explains how she and Myrtle bribed detective MacSwain to cover up the killing as a suicide. The narrator then visits Myrtle in the hospital, where she confirms the story and signs a written statement.

The narrator tracks down MacSwain, who confesses to having heard Tim Noonan name 'Max' as his killer before dying. The narrator brings MacSwain to Noonan, who beats him and has him jailed. Noonan then reinterviews Peak Murry, who admits he lied about Whisper's alibi for the night of Tim Noonan's murder, signaling a shift in Noonan's allegiance.

XIV: Max

The narrator returns MacSwain to Noonan, then observes the city erupting into violence.

The narrator briefs newly arrived operatives Mickey Linehan and Dick Foley on the corrupt state of Personville, outlining a plan to sow discord among the city's power brokers. XVII: Reno
The narrator and Dinah Brand flee with Reno Starkey after a violent shootout at the Silver Arrow roadhouse. Earlier, Dinah reveals that Reno has been released on bail for a safe-blowing job, and she and the narrator discuss the danger posed by Max Thaler (Whisper), whom the narrator has framed for a murder he did not commit. They hide in a shack, are ambushed by pursuers, and escape, culminating in Reno's rescue.

The narrator discovers the murdered body of lawyer Charles Proctor Dawn in a stairwell alcove, and takes a black book and papers from his pockets. Among the papers are love letters from Elihu Willsson to Dinah Brand. The narrator visits Helen Albury, sister of the man who confessed to killing Donald Willsson, and accuses her of murdering Dinah Brand with an ice pick, but she remains silent. He then learns that Dawn was a shady lawyer involved in a blackmail case, and that the police have taken Helen Albury in for questioning after she was seen at Dawn's office.

Wanted
The narrator, now wanted for the murders of Dinah Brand and Charles Proctor Dawn, goes into hiding. He meets with Reno Starkey, who proposes a temporary truce with Whisper Thaler to eliminate Pete the Finn. The narrator reveals that Whisper is already dead, killed by Dan Rolff. They conspire to spread a false rumor that Whisper has been captured by McGraw, hoping to draw out his mob and create a diversion for an attack on Pete the Finn.
Chapter 27
XXV: Whiskeytown
Reno Starkey leads a heavily armed assault on a brick building housing Pete the Finn and his men. The attack involves bombs, gunfire, and a coordinated effort with multiple cars. After dynamiting the building and burning a neighboring house, Reno executes Pete the Finn in cold blood. The getaway turns chaotic as Thaler's mob and Pete's reinforcements ambush them. The narrator escapes through back alleys and eventually ends up on Elihu Willsson's front steps.
Chapter 28
XXVI: Blackmail
The narrator confronts Elihu Willsson at his home in the early morning, using four love letters recovered from Dawn to blackmail him into reclaiming control of Personville. He reveals that Pete the Finn, Lew Yard, Whisper Thaler, and Noonan are dead, and demands that Willsson suspend the police department and call in the national guard. Willsson offers the narrator the job of chief of police, but he refuses. After leaving, the narrator meets Mickey Linehan, and they discuss the recent events, including the riot, the deaths, and the possibility that the police officers Shepp and Vanaman looted Dinah Brand's room and took the letters. The narrator theorizes that Dan Rolff killed Whisper Thaler with the ice pick, believing Whisper murdered Dinah.
Chapter 29
XXVII: Warehouses
The Narrator and Mickey Linehan search for Whisper Thaler's hideout in warehouses. After a false lead involving bootleg liquor, they find the Redman warehouse where they witness Reno Starkey kill Whisper Thaler. Reno confesses to killing Dinah Brand and explains the events of that night. Reno dies from his wounds, and the Narrator flees to Ogden before returning to San Francisco.
