Vinicius, renewed by hope after leaving the Apostle, goes to the prison but is denied entry by a centurion citing a command from Caesar. A Christian pretorian guard offers to deliver a letter to Lygia. Petronius returns with news of Poppaea's misfortune and plans to intercede. Vinicius falls asleep and dreams of Lygia and the Apostle Peter. He later encounters Chilo Chilonides, now a favored Augustian, who betrayed Lygia. Vinicius admits he wronged Chilo, but Chilo dismisses him with contempt.
