Why does Lady Catherine confront Elizabeth about Darcy?

Lady Catherine hears a rumor that Darcy may marry Elizabeth and arrives to forbid it. She treats Elizabeth’s manners, family, and lack of fortune as disqualifications that rank should decide. The scene is comic tyranny — and a final test of Elizabeth’s autonomy. Elizabeth refuses to promise she will never accept Darcy.

The confrontation backfires. Darcy hears of Elizabeth’s refusal to be bullied and takes it as encouragement.
