Chapter 2
Planet of the Damned
Brion Brandd, a champion from the planet Anvhar, is recruited by Ihjel to help prevent a war between the planets Nyjord and Dis. After winning the Twenties, a brutal competition, Brion is taken to Dis, a harsh desert world. He survives an ambush, endures the desert, and is rescued by the native Disan. He learns of the parasitic Magter who control the Disan and must confront them to stop Nyjord's planned bombing and the ensuing counterstrike.
Chapter 3
I
Brion Brandd is in the final round of the Twenties, a grueling mental and physical competition. Exhausted and facing the formidable Irolg, he uses a self-hypnotic technique to tap into hidden reserves of strength, ultimately winning the match. The chapter also reveals a mysterious intrusion the night before, where an unknown figure tried to see Brion against official orders.
Chapter 4
II
Winner Ihjel visits Brion Brandd in the hospital, pressing him to leave Anvhar for a critical offworld mission. Despite Brion's initial refusal, citing his victory in the Twenties and his responsibilities on Anvhar, Ihjel challenges his worldview, urging him to consider a broader sense of duty to humanity. The chapter ends with Ihjel forcing his way in and the two men locked in a tense confrontation.

Brion Brandd, recovering from his victory in the Twenties, experiences intrusive thoughts that make him question his pride in Anvhar. He realizes Winner Ihjel is responsible and demands an explanation. Ihjel reveals that Anvhar's society was artificially constructed by the Cultural Relationships Foundation using societics, and that Brion is uniquely needed to help save a planet of seven million people from destruction. Despite Brion's skepticism, Ihjel insists on his singular ability and sense of obligation to mankind.

IV
Brion recovers from his injuries aboard Ihjel's ship while learning the Disan language. They rendezvous with a drop-capsule containing Dr. Lea Morees, an exobiologist who is furious at being tricked into the mission. Ihjel uses psychological manipulation to get her to accept the assignment, and they prepare for the briefing about Dis.

Ihjel briefs Brion and Lea on the planet Dis, a scorched and inhospitable world whose inhabitants have adapted biologically and culturally to extreme conditions. The Disans, driven by a deep hatred of offworlders, have acquired cobalt bombs and threaten to attack the neighboring planet Nyjord. A Nyjord fleet stands ready to annihilate Dis if the deadline for surrender passes. Ihjel reveals that the Cultural Relationships Foundation is secretly working to prevent the war, and he intends to drop the bombs himself if necessary to preserve Nyjord's nonviolent society. Lea, an exobiologist and anthropologist, agrees to help, and Brion is tasked with studying the Disans.

Brion, Lea, and Ihjel land on Dis and are immediately ambushed. Ihjel is killed by an ion rifle, and Brion kills the attackers in a violent struggle. The sand car is sabotaged, forcing Brion and Lea to walk 150 kilometers to Hovedstad. Lea suffers a concussion and hysteria, but Brion remains determined.

Brion carries the injured Lea through the desert after the ambush, struggling with thirst, fatigue, and his own guilt over killing three men. Brion attempts to enlist the Disans' help against the Magter, but his request is met with hostility and suspicion, particularly from Gebk. After a tense encounter, he returns to the Foundation building and later ventures into Hovedstad at night, where he is covertly contacted by Ulv. Ulv leads him to a hidden chamber, but Brion is ambushed by a Disan. He then contacts Professor Krafft, who reveals that the deadline for evacuation has been shortened to two days due to detected jump-space energy transmissions. Brion decides to personally deliver the news to the Magter, overruling Krafft's concerns, and orders a sand car and armed men for the mission.
Chapter 12
The Confrontation with Lig-magte
Brion Brandd enters the central chamber of the Disan stronghold to confront the magter, led by Lig-magte. He delivers the Nyjorders' message of surrender and imminent destruction, but the emotionless magter attack him. A brutal fight ensues, culminating in Brion killing Lig-magte with a karate death blow. The chapter explores Brion's empathetic shock at the magter's complete lack of emotion and his struggle to communicate with beings who respond only to violence.

Brion and Lea debate the nature of the magter, with Brion theorizing they are alien beings due to their complete lack of emotion and indifference to death. Lea suggests alternative explanations like mutation or disease. Brion recounts his expedition to observe the magter firsthand, contrasting them with the human Disans like Ulv. He then attempts to escape from the magter after killing Lig-magte, using a woman as a distraction and relying on covering fire from his guards to flee.

Chapter 15
XIII
Brion and Telt return to Hovedstad to find the Foundation building destroyed by a raid, killing Lea, Doctor Stine, Faussel, and others. Brion blames himself. During a raid on a magter tower, Brion insists on carrying a magter corpse despite Telt's objections, feeling the horror of killing. They escape and learn from Hys that it is the last day before the bombing. Telt reveals his bitterness about being called a butcher for doing what he believes is necessary.

After a devastating raid by the magter, Brion learns from Ulv that the Foundation building has been destroyed and everyone inside killed, except Lea, whom Ulv rescued. Brion and Telt bring Lea to a hidden warehouse, where Telt administers an antidote to the native drug sover. Lea awakens in shock, traumatized by witnessing Dr. Stine's murder. Brion struggles to convince her to continue their mission to examine the magter body. Meanwhile, Telt discovers a suspicious radioactivity spike from their earlier visit to the magter tower, suggesting a possible cobalt bomb, and leaves to verify his findings with Hys.
Chapter 17
The Autopsy
Brion forces a reluctant and exhausted Lea to perform an autopsy on a magter corpse, pushing her through empathy and sheer will. After initial despair and a microscopic examination, Lea discovers a symbiotic organism within the magter's cells, recalling a similar structure in the insect Icerya purchasi. She then uses a power saw to open the skull, revealing the alien presence in the brain.

Brion's desperate radio plea to Krafft fails to convince him to halt the bombing, as his evidence about the cobalt bombs and the magter's brain parasite seems too thin. Meanwhile, Lea's autopsy of a magter reveals a green brain-symbiote that has performed a functional prefrontal lobotomy, destroying the frontal lobes and higher emotions, turning the magter into ruthless survivors. Brion realizes the symbiote is now a parasite driving the magter to suicidal aggression, but with only eight hours until the bombs drop, he struggles to find a way to stop the Nyjorder attack.
Chapter 19
XVII
Brion decides to stay on Dis to fight the magter and find the cobalt bombs, while Lea returns to the Nyjord fleet with the magter corpse to convince Krafft to delay the bombing. Brion and Ulv track the bombs to a cave, where they discover a jump-space generator and twelve bomb warheads. Brion transmits a description to the fleet, but his signal is blocked by the mountain.
Chapter 20
XVIII
Brion and Ulv are cornered by the magter in a cave, but a Nyjord rescue force arrives after discovering the brain parasite. Hys and Krafft explain that the Nyjorders landed despite knowing the magter had bombs, because they now see the magter as sick rather than alien. Brion and Ulv had earlier destroyed the jump-field controls to prevent a counterstrike, with Ulv killing a technician and Brion shorting the control board. The Nyjorders' united response and the revelation of the parasite shift the conflict from war to a medical crisis.

Brion and Lea discuss their future after the conflict on Dis, revealing genetic incompatibilities that prevent their marriage.
