On his twenty-first birthday, Anodos inherits his father's old secretary and discovers a hidden compartment containing withered rose-leaves and a packet of papers. A tiny woman emerges from the compartment, transforms into a tall lady, and promises to lead him into Fairy Land. She reminds him of his conversation with his sister about fairy tales and grants his wish to find the way. After gazing into her eyes, he sees a vision of a moonlit sea and hears her voice confirming it is Fairy Land. He returns to bed, and upon waking, recalls these events, anticipating the fulfillment of her promise.
