What happens
Insarov wakes feeling weak and awaits Renditch's arrival. A visitor, Lupoyarov, arrives and talks at length about politics, war, and his travels, exhausting Insarov. After Lupoyarov leaves, Insarov criticizes the younger generation as empty chatterboxes. Elena tends to him, but his condition worsens. Elena falls asleep and has a disturbing dream. She wakes to find Insarov dying; he declares his love and says goodbye. Renditch arrives with a doctor, who pronounces Insarov dead from aneurism and lung disease.
