John Trenchard, a fifteen-year-old orphan living with his strict aunt in the decaying village of Moonfleet, recalls an evening in October 1757. After reading the Arabian Nights, he steps outside and meets Ratsey the sexton, who tells him about the legend of Colonel John Mohune (Blackbeard), a treacherous ancestor who supposedly hid a treasure and now haunts the churchyard. Ratsey invites John to the Why Not? inn, where the grim innkeeper Elzevir Block mourns his son David. John reflects on the Mohune family's decline and their black 'Y' emblem, which marks everything in the village.
