Little Fuzzy also demonstrates protective instincts by killing a land-prawn that entered the hut.

Jack Holloway continues to bond with the Fuzzies, trading their artifacts and observing their tool use. He kills a damnthing after Little Fuzzy warns him, and later hosts Constabulary officers Lunt and Khadra, who witness the Fuzzies' intelligence and tool-making abilities. Leonard Kellogg and Ernst Mallin discuss the possibility that the Fuzzies are sapient, with Mallin suggesting that Rainsford and Holloway may be perpetrating a hoax. They plan to analyze Holloway's tape and conduct a study to debunk the claims. Meanwhile, at Holloway's camp, the Fuzzies play with a molecule-model kit, showing artistic and engineering skills. Victor Grego realizes the catastrophic implications for the Company if the Fuzzies are sapient, as it would void their charter, and he tasks Kellogg with taking charge of the investigation to control the narrative.

The Fuzzies bury Goldilocks with ritual care, convincing Lunt to arrest Kellogg. Meanwhile, Gerd van Riebeek reveals that Kellogg and Mallin are preparing a fraudulent report claiming the Fuzzies are a hoax, because proving sapience would void the Company's charter. Van Riebeek quits the Company and partners with Holloway, who calls the constabulary to evict the unwanted guests from his camp.

Jack Holloway faces homicide charges for killing Kurt Borch, while Leonard Kellogg is charged with killing a Fuzzy named Goldilocks. O'Brien reveals the Fuzzies were taken to the Zarathustra Company's Science Center, which is headed by Dr. Ernst Mallin, the defense's chief scientific witness. Pendarvis issues orders for their recovery and appoints Holloway as guardian. Later, at Holloway's camp, the group discusses the upcoming trial strategy, anticipating the defense will try to exclude or attack evidence of the Fuzzies' sapience. Suddenly, George Lunt arrives with a search warrant and two armed strangers, signaling a new threat.

Jack Holloway and Gerd van Riebeek return to the hotel suite to find Gus Brannhard, Ben Rainsford, and Baby Fuzzy meeting the press. Colonial Marshal Max Fane serves a court order to Ernst Mallin for the return of the Fuzzies, but Mallin admits they are missing. As the trial approaches, the Fuzzies are given better accommodations at the Hotel Mallory, and four strange Fuzzies with a kitten are introduced. Gus Brannhard reports that the Lurkin girl recanted her story under veridication, implicating Woller and a desk sergeant. Judge Pendarvis decides on a judicial trial by three judges. Ben Rainsford, George Lunt, and others arrive with their Fuzzies. Colonel Ferguson informs Max Fane that Woller and Fuentes have been caught hiding at Nick Emmert's hunting lodge, and they admitted Emmert's involvement.
