What happens
M. Madeleine (Jean Valjean) arrives at the scene of an accident where old Father Fauchelevent is trapped under his fallen cart. Despite Fauchelevent being one of his few enemies, Madeleine offers a reward for anyone strong enough to lift the cart, but no one volunteers. Javert remarks that only a convict from Toulon could do it. Madeleine then crawls under the cart himself and, with a tremendous effort, lifts it enough for others to pull Fauchelevent free. The old man is saved, and Madeleine, though exhausted and pale, fixes a tranquil gaze on Javert.
