Preparations and Discoveries explained

The Earthmen and Nansalians work together to prepare for the Satorian threat, sharing technology and blueprints.

What happens

The Earthmen and Nansalians work together to prepare for the Satorian threat, sharing technology and blueprints. Arcot and Morey take a break to visit Tharlano's observatory, where they confirm the location of Earth's galaxy. A Satorian spy attempts to assassinate them but is thwarted by Torlos. Arcot uses hypnosis and telepathy to extract information from the spy, learning of an imminent attack but not the nature of the new weapon. The chapter ends with a demonstration of the Ancient Mariner's armaments and a return to Nansal to accelerate production.

Themes in this chapter

  • Science and Technology as Tools

The chapter emphasizes the transfer of advanced technology (molecular ray, heat beams, telectroscope) to the Nansalians for defense, showcasing science as a practical tool for survival.

  • Conflict and Cooperation Between Civilizations

The Earthmen and Nansalians cooperate against the common Satorian enemy, while the spy's assassination attempt highlights the ongoing conflict.

  • The Dangers of Arrogance and Misunderstanding

The Satorians' secrecy about their new weapon and the Nansalians' fear of it illustrate how misunderstanding and arrogance can escalate threats.

Characters to notice

  • Dr. Richard Arcot

Leads the technology transfer, uses hypnosis and telepathy on the Satorian spy, and pilots the Ancient Mariner during the demonstration.

  • Morey

Assists in planning and relays Arcot's findings to the Council; operates the telectroscope.

  • Wade

Reports on the ship's supplies and the Nansalians' chemical synthesis capabilities.

  • Torlos

Saves Arcot and Morey from the Satorian spy by leaping to shield them and taking bullets.

  • Tharlano

Hosts the observatory visit, confirms the location of Earth's galaxy, and learns to use the telectroscope.

  • John Fuller

Distributes microfilmed plans to Nansalian engineers and participates in the armament demonstration.

Key passages

  • All the way back to Nansal, they spent the time discussing the problem in the Ancient Mariner ’s Library. It was finally agreed that the necessary plans and blueprints were to be given to the Nansalians, who could start production at once.

During the return trip to Nansal, the group debated the crisis and decided to hand over the blueprints so the Nansalians could begin manufacturing immediately.

Highlights the collaborative decision to share technology.

  • Arcot walked over as if to inspect the prisoner. For an instant, the man looked defiantly at Arcot. Arcot glared back. At the same time, his powerful mind reached out and began to work subtly within the prisoner’s brain.

Arcot approached the captive under the guise of inspection, then used his mental abilities to hypnotically probe the spy's mind.

Demonstrates Arcot's use of telepathy and hypnosis for interrogation.

  • Wade triggered his molecular projector, and a pale beam reached out toward the cliff. Instantly, the cliff leaped ten miles into the air, whining and roaring as it shot up through the atmosphere.

Wade fired the molecular ray at a cliff, causing the entire rock face to rocket upward with a deafening noise.

Illustrates the destructive power of the molecular projector.
