Power of Mind explained

Arcot demonstrates to Earth's assembled scientists his new mental relay control, which allows him to create and manipulate artificial matter using cosmic power.

What happens

Arcot demonstrates to Earth's assembled scientists his new mental relay control, which allows him to create and manipulate artificial matter using cosmic power. He shows the creation of a sphere, a hand that lifts a heavy lux metal bar, transmutation of iron into platinum, and the synthesis of super-heavy elements. Finally, he creates Cosmium, an incredibly dense and strong material for the new spaceship, and ends with a theatrical supernatural display of a severed hand and a figure of Death.

Themes in this chapter

  • Technological Progress and Its Consequences

Arcot's new mental relay and artificial matter represent a leap in technology, with power so vast it is 'utterly beyond comprehension' and capable of creating or destroying on a cosmic scale.

  • The Value of Knowledge and Science

The chapter emphasizes the importance of understanding the mathematics and physics behind the new power, and the scientists' role in advancing knowledge.

Characters to notice

  • Arcot

Demonstrates mental relay control, creates artificial matter, transmutes elements, and synthesizes Cosmium.

  • Morey

Assists Arcot by operating the relay switch and providing commentary on the demonstrations.

Key passages

  • Will, thought, concentration—they are efforts, they require energy. Then they can exert energy! That is the key to the whole thing.

Mental effort is a form of energy that can be harnessed to control physical matter.

Arcot explains the principle behind the mental relay control.

  • The power is so enormous that nothing short of a sun could serve as a demonstration-hall.

The energy available is comparable to that of a star, making it impossible to demonstrate fully on Earth.

Arcot emphasizes the scale of cosmic power.

  • Our new ship will carry six-inch armor. Six inches would be the equivalent of eighteen miles of solid steel.

The new Cosmium armor is incredibly strong, with six inches providing protection equivalent to eighteen miles of steel.

Arcot describes the practical application of Cosmium for the spaceship.
