Chapter 1

While skating on the lake during a fierce blizzard, Frank and Joe Hardy, along with Chet Morton and Jerry Gilroy, take shelter by a cliff. They hear a mysterious crash and are buried by an avalanche of snow. After freeing themselves, they hear a cry for help and discover a small cottage buried in the snow.
Chapter 3
III: Jadbury Wilson
The Hardy boys and their friends discover that a cottage has been blown off a cliff by the blizzard. They rescue the elderly owner, Jadbury Wilson, who is trapped inside. After making the cabin habitable, they share a meal and listen to Wilson's tales of his past as a miner in Montana, Nevada, and the Klondike, which sparks the boys' interest.

The boys and Chet wait out the blizzard in Jadbury Wilson's wrecked cabin. Wilson recounts his life of misfortune, including losing a rich gold mine in Nevada through legal trickery, and later being betrayed by his partner Dawson, who disappeared with four bags of gold during a bandit attack led by Black Pepper. The boys, moved by his story, insist he come to town with them to recover.

After the blizzard, the Hardy boys and their friends transport the injured Jadbury Wilson to their home, where Mrs. Hardy insists he stay until he recovers. The next day, a school closure due to storm damage leads to a snowball fight that targets Officer Con Riley, who had tried to stop their bobsledding.

The Hardy boys enjoy dinner with Jadbury Wilson, who shares tales of his mining past and his lost gold. A telegram from Fenton Hardy summons Frank and Joe to Montana, and they excitedly prepare for the journey.

After discovering the deception, they disembark at a small town and accept a ride from a friendly stranger, who later reveals his true intentions by blocking the road with accomplices and pulling a gun on them.

The Escape
Frank and Joe Hardy are ambushed by a gang of toughs while being driven to Greendale, but they fight back and are rescued by two local men whose chickens had been run over by the same gang. After the escape, the boys return to town and take a night train back to Chicago, resolving to change their names and appearances to avoid further interference on their journey west.

X: On Guard
The Hardy boys, having returned to Chicago, take precautions to avoid detection by Hopkins and his gang. They disguise themselves with spectacles and books, board their train separately, and successfully evade a lookout. During a stop in the mountains, Frank overhears two men discussing their search for the boys, confirming that their disguise has worked. The chapter ends as they finally arrive in Lucky Bottom.

XI: Fenton Hardy’s Story
Frank and Joe reunite with their injured father, Fenton Hardy, at Hank Shale's cabin. Fenton explains that he cracked his ribs while chasing a member of Black Pepper's gang and reveals the details of the case: a quantity of gold stolen from three miners, including Bart Dawson, by the outlaw gang. The boys share their own encounter with Jadbury Wilson, who had mentioned Dawson and Black Pepper. Fenton suspects the gang still knows where the gold is hidden and is waiting to retrieve it. The Cave-in
The Hardy boys begin their systematic search for the hidden gold, exploring an abandoned mine. Frank becomes trapped when a boulder pins his foot, and while Joe retrieves a crowbar, the mine shaft caves in, trapping them both underground.
Chapter 13
XIII: In the Depths of the Earth
After the shaft caves in, Joe Hardy uses a crowbar to free Frank from under a boulder. The brothers realize they are trapped underground with the main shaft blocked and the tunnel leading to a dead end. They follow the tunnel hoping for an exit but find only a wall of rock, facing the grim prospect of suffocation and starvation.

Attacked by the Outlaws
Trapped in a dead-end tunnel, Frank and Joe discover a narrow air shaft leading to another mine. They climb to the surface, only to be captured by three rough men working for the outlaw Black Pepper. After a brief struggle, the boys are held prisoner while one of the men goes to fetch Black Pepper to interrogate them.
Chapter 15
The Trap
Frank and Joe are captured by Slim and Shorty, members of Black Pepper's gang, but Frank cleverly disarms Slim with a well-aimed rock, allowing the brothers to escape. They return to Hank Shale's cabin, where their father Fenton Hardy initially wants to drop the case for safety, but the boys persuade him to let them continue. After days of fruitless searching, they learn the gang may have moved camp. Determined, the boys venture into the mountains, discover a trail, and eventually ambush and capture Slim, who had been following them.
Chapter 16
XVI: Information
Frank and Joe capture Slim Briggs and learn from him that Black Pepper's gang has been double-crossing each other. Slim reveals that Black Pepper hid the gold himself and that the gang knew the boys were searching the old mines. The boys bring Slim to Lucky Bottom, where they face a reluctant sheriff but are backed by angry miners led by Bart Dawson, forcing the sheriff to lock Slim up. Slim realizes he was tricked into confessing, believing the rest of the gang had been captured.
Chapter 17
XVII: The Outlaw's Notebook
Frank and Joe meet Bart Dawson in jail and are struck by his honest demeanor, conflicting with Jadbury Wilson's accusations. They decide to investigate further and return to the outlaws' abandoned cabin, where they discover Black Pepper's notebook containing a map and directions to the hidden gold in the Lone Tree Mine. Excitedly, they set off to recover the treasure before the outlaws can.
Chapter 18
The Blizzard
The Hardy boys venture into a severe blizzard while searching for the Lone Tree Mine. They struggle to follow the trail as snow obliterates all landmarks. Frank twists his ankle in a fall, and the brothers become separated in the whiteout. Both become lost, shouting for each other but hearing only the wind. Frank considers returning to Hank Shale's for help but realizes he too is lost. The chapter ends with both boys isolated and in grave danger from the storm.

XIX: The Lone Tree
Frank and Joe Hardy, separated in a blizzard, reunite after Frank builds a signal fire. They decide to continue their search for the Lone Tree mine, where they discover a cave entrance. Inside, they are surrounded by a pack of wolves, blocking their escape.
Chapter 20
XX: Down the Shaft
Frank and Joe Hardy find themselves trapped in a wolf den inside an abandoned mine. Using a revolver taken from Slim Briggs, Frank shoots several wolves to fend off the pack. The brothers retreat into a narrow tunnel, pursued by a lone wolf. After a tense struggle, Frank fires again, wounding the animal, but as he steps backward to escape, he loses his footing and falls into darkness.
Chapter 21
Underground
The Hardy boys navigate the treacherous tunnels of the abandoned mine, following the map from the outlaw's notebook. After a harrowing fall down a shaft while escaping a wolf, they discover the hidden entrance to the 'blue room' where the gold is supposedly buried. Frank waits in the blue chamber while Joe retrieves a shovel to dig for the treasure.

XXII: Black Pepper
Frank and Joe Hardy successfully uncover the four sacks of gold dust and nuggets hidden in the blue room of the mine. As they prepare to leave, they are confronted by the notorious outlaw Black Pepper, who levels two revolvers at them.
Chapter 23
The Capture
Frank and Joe Hardy, having just recovered the hidden gold, are surprised by Black Pepper in the mine. Using a clever trick, they disarm and capture the outlaw, then march him out of the mine and through the blizzard to Hank Shale's cabin. After presenting the gold and their prisoner to a stunned Fenton Hardy, Hank Shale, and Bart Dawson, they bind Black Pepper and escort him to the Lucky Bottom jail, where he is locked up to the amazement of the townspeople.
Chapter 24
Bart Dawson Explains
In Hank Shale's cabin, the Hardy boys recount their adventures to their father and the two old miners. Bart Dawson reveals that he lost his memory after being shot during an outlaw attack and only recently recovered it, explaining why he never returned to his partners. He learns that Jadbury Wilson is still alive and resolves to return East to share the gold with him. Fenton Hardy praises his sons and promises to share the reward with them.
