Characters frequently undergo physical or magical transformations (e.g., frog to prince, lion to human, ass to youth) as a reward for virtue or as a test, often leading to redemption and a happy ending.

Kind, humble, and obedient characters (like the stepdaughter in 'The Three Little Men in the Wood') are rewarded with beauty, wealth, or marriage, while greedy, cruel, or envious characters (like the stepmother and stepsister) face harsh consequences.

Envy drives much of the conflict, as seen in the stepmother's attempts to kill Snow-white out of jealousy for her beauty, and the stepmother's envy of her stepdaughter's loveliness in 'The Three Little Men in the Wood.'

Characters often make binding promises (e.g., the princess to the frog, the father to the lion) that must be kept, leading to trials or transformations, highlighting the importance of honoring one's word.

Marriage often bridges class divides, with poor or humble characters (like the miller's boy or the girl with the spindle) marrying royalty, emphasizing that inner worth and virtue transcend social status.

Magical objects (golden ball, wishing-cap, talking animals), enchanted beings (witches, dwarfs, transformed princes), and supernatural events (gold falling from mouths, resurrection) are central to the plot and moral lessons.

Family relationships are fraught with betrayal, such as stepmothers abusing stepchildren, fathers making harmful promises, or siblings competing, yet loyalty and rescue (as with the seven ravens or gold-children) also appear.

Greed leads to ruin, as in the tale of the goldsmith who steals the tailor's three wishes and ends up with humps, or the fisherman's wife whose insatiable curiosity and greed cause the loss of their magical castle.
