What happens
A king and queen, long childless, finally have a son who is born as a donkey. Despite the queen's horror, the king accepts him as heir. The donkey grows up merry and musical, learning to play the lute. He leaves home with a faithful companion and arrives at a kingdom where he wins the king's favor and marries the beautiful princess. On their wedding night, he sheds his donkey skin to reveal a handsome youth. The king discovers the truth, burns the skin, and the youth inherits half the kingdom, later the whole, and lives magnificently.
