Jaggers, Wemmick, Compeyson, and Magwitch all show how legal and social surfaces hide the machinery that actually moves Pip’s life.
Great Expectations is full of professionals who manage how things look. Jaggers washes his hands; Wemmick splits Walworth from Little Britain; Compeyson’s gentlemanly manner makes Magwitch look like the only criminal. Pip’s own narrative voice is another surface — he tells us what he thought he knew, then revises it.
The concept matters because the plot’s surprises are design surprises, not miracles. Miss Havisham’s wealth is not Pip’s destiny; Magwitch’s gratitude is. Molly’s story connects to Estella.
