What happens
On May 13, Dr. Ferguson and Kennedy reconnoiter their landing spot on a solid patch of ground amid the marshes of Lake Tchad. They remove the damaged outer covering of the Victoria, reducing its size by one fifth, and the doctor recalculates the balloon's equilibrium. Kennedy hunts for fresh provisions while the doctor prepares the balloon. They then ascend and thoroughly search the lake and its islands for Joe, but find no trace of him. They are carried by winds to Tangalia and later back to their starting point near Lari, where they spend the night in despair, still resolved to continue the search.
