What happens
The Victoria passes over Kouka, the capital of Bornou, and the islands of the Biddiomahs before being attacked by a flock of fourteen giant condors. Despite attempts to ascend, the birds tear the balloon's silk, causing a rapid descent. After jettisoning ballast, water, and provisions, Joe sacrifices himself by leaping from the car to lighten the load, allowing the balloon to rise and carry Ferguson and Kennedy to safety on the northern shore of Lake Tchad.
