What happens
Manuel and Freydis part at the altar of Vel-Tyno. Freydis, now mortal after extinguishing the sacred fire, prepares to return to her realm through the fire. Manuel reveals that his declarations of love were partly prearranged by King Helmas's advice, but he cannot lie about his true feelings. He burns the parchment she gave him, burning his hand in the process. Freydis, moved by his sincerity and her new humanity, delays her departure to bandage his wound, thereby missing the hour when the moon is void and powerless, and becomes fully human. Meanwhile, Alianora arranges her marriage to the King of England with a reduced dowry, celebrated throughout Provence.
