Cousin Benedict goes missing, causing distress for Mrs. Weldon. A severe, unseasonable rainstorm threatens the region, leading the natives to summon a powerful mganga (magician) to stop the rain. The magician, who is actually Hercules in disguise, uses the superstition of the crowd to blame Mrs. Weldon and Jack for the rain, then pretends to sacrifice them but instead rescues them, escaping by canoe to rejoin Dick Sands.
