What happens
Captain Hull leads a dangerous whale hunt, successfully harpooning a mother finback whale. The whale, protecting her calf, dives deep and tows the whaleboat far from the Pilgrim. After exhausting nearly all their line, the whale finally tires and surfaces, but then attacks the boat furiously. Despite the crew's skill, the whale's violent blows capsize the boat, and Captain Hull and boatswain Howick are lost at sea.
