He continues searching for a secret crypt near the oracle chamber.

    After the fall of Fort Tuscelan and the death of the Pictish shaman Zogar Sag, the frontier of Aquilonia is pushed back to Thunder River. Conan swears a barbaric oath to avenge them by taking ten Pictish heads for Balthus and seven for the dog.

She explains that she is a dancing-girl and that her lover, Alafdhal, has gone mad after drinking a love potion given to her by the priest Totrasmek, who sought revenge for her rejection. Conan agrees to help her find Alafdhal. They encounter the mad Alafdhal in an alley, and Conan knocks him unconscious. Zabibi then implores Conan to kill Totrasmek, and they proceed to the temple of Hanuman. Inside, Zabibi triggers a secret door but is snatched away by a misshapen hand, leaving Conan alone in the shrine.

    VII: He Comes from the Dark

    Conan confronts Olmec, who reveals that Tascela plans to sacrifice Valeria to renew her own youth. Olmec leads Conan through a secret passage into Tecuhltli, but betrays him. Conan kills Olmec in the struggle and bursts into the throne room, where Tolkemec, a monstrous figure from the catacombs, appears and begins slaughtering the Tecuhltli with a magical wand.

    This chapter provides a fictional historical background for the Conan stories, detailing the rise and fall of civilizations from the Pre-Cataclysmic Age through the Hyborian Age. It describes the cataclysm that sank Atlantis and Lemuria, the emergence of the Hyborian peoples, the formation of kingdoms such as Aquilonia and Nemedia, and the growing power of barbarian races like the Picts, Cimmerians, and Nordheimir. The narrative culminates in the rise of the Picts under the influence of the Nemedian priest Arus and the chief Gorm, setting the stage for future conflicts.
