Harvey demands to be taken to New York, but Troop refuses, insisting Harvey work as a crew member. Harvey's arrogance and threats lead to a physical confrontation, and he is knocked down. Troop assigns him to work under Dan, his son, and Harvey is left to adjust to his new circumstances.

Harvey Cheyne, after being knocked down by Captain Disko Troop for accusing him of theft, is comforted by Dan Troop. After the fishing season, the crew returns to Gloucester, where Harvey, overwhelmed by the return to land, breaks down in tears. He is met by Dan's mother and taken to the Troop home, feeling lonelier than ever until he can telegraph his parents. The chapter ends with the crew enjoying their time ashore, with Dan acting mysteriously about something.

Harvey Cheyne, senior, is in San Diego with his wife, who is broken down with grief over the belief that her son drowned. He is overwhelmed by business troubles and personal sorrow. A telegram arrives with the news that Harvey is alive and was picked up by the fishing schooner 'We're Here'. The family is overjoyed. Harvey meets his parents on the 'Constance', his father's private yacht, and tells them about his experiences. He insists on returning to Gloucester to finish his work as tallyman. The next day, the Cheynes visit the 'We're Here' and meet the crew. Mrs. Cheyne hosts the crew for a meal on the 'Constance'. Mr. Cheyne and Captain Disko Troop discuss the future, and Cheyne offers to take Dan on as a potential mate on his tea-clippers.
