Xavier de Maistre

Xavier de Maistre (1763–1852) was a French aristocrat, military officer, and author whose literary career began during a period of house arrest. His seminal work, "Voyage autour de ma chambre" (1794), is a playful, philosophical travelogue that recounts a journey around his bedroom, blending humor, introspection, and keen observation. This short novel established him as a pioneer of the "armchair travel" genre and influenced later writers of psychological fiction. De Maistre also wrote "Expédition nocturne autour de ma chambre" and "Les Prisonniers du Caucase," the latter drawing on his military service in Russia. His works are celebrated for their wit, elegance, and exploration of the inner life, securing his place as a minor but enduring figure in French literature. De Maistre spent his later years in Russia, where he served as a librarian and continued writing until his death.
