William Gerhardie

William Gerhardie (1895–1977) was an English novelist, playwright, and literary critic, born in St. Petersburg to a British cotton merchant and his Russian wife. He studied at Oxford and served in the British military during World War I. His first novel, "Futility" (1922), drew on his Russian experiences and was praised by H.G. Wells and Evelyn Waugh. Gerhardie's later works include "The Polyglots" (1925) and "Pending Heaven" (1930), which further explored themes of love, war, and absurdity. Though his reputation faded mid-century, he was rediscovered as a precursor to modern comic fiction, admired for his ironic style and psychological depth. His literary legacy rests on his innovative narrative voice and influence on writers like Anthony Powell.
