W. W. Jacobs

William Wymark Jacobs was born on September 8, 1863, in London, England, and worked as a civil servant before turning to writing. He gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for his comic stories about sailors and dockworkers, often published in magazines and collected in volumes such as "Many Cargoes" (1896) and "The Lady of the Barge" (1902). The latter collection contains his most famous work, "The Monkey's Paw," a masterful horror tale of fate and consequence that has become a cornerstone of supernatural literature. Jacobs's skill lay in his ability to evoke dread from ordinary domestic life, a technique that influenced later writers of the macabre.
