V.S. Naipaul

Born in Trinidad to Indian Hindu grandparents, V.S. Naipaul moved to England on a scholarship to Oxford, where he began his writing career. His early novels, including The Mystic Masseur and The Suffrage of Elvira, draw on Caribbean life with comic irony. A House for Mr Biswas (1961), widely considered his greatest work, follows a Trinidadian man’s quest for independence and a home, blending personal and colonial history. Naipaul’s later travel writing, such as Among the Believers and A Turn in the South, examined societies in transition with unflinching clarity. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2001, praised for his ‘incorruptible scrutiny’ of power and identity. His legacy endures as a master of prose and a complex chronicler of the postcolonial world.
