Tsitsi Dangarembga

Tsitsi Dangarembga was born in 1959 in Mutoko, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). She studied medicine at the University of Cambridge and later earned a degree in psychology and a master’s in film. Her first novel, Nervous Conditions (1988), won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and is widely taught as a classic of postcolonial literature, chronicling a young girl’s struggle for education under colonial rule. Dangarembga continued the story in The Book of Not (2006) and This Mournable Body (2018), which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. She is also a filmmaker and playwright, and her work consistently examines the intersections of race, gender, and power in Zimbabwe. In 2021, she was awarded the PEN Pinter Prize for her courageous writing and activism.
