Susanna Haswell Rowson

Susanna Haswell Rowson was born in 1762 in Portsmouth, England, and spent part of her childhood in colonial Massachusetts before returning to England. She worked as a governess and actress before turning to writing. Her most famous work, "Charlotte Temple" (1791), a sentimental novel about a seduced and abandoned young woman, became a phenomenal bestseller in the United States, going through over 200 editions. Rowson also wrote other novels, plays, and educational texts, and she later ran a successful academy for young women in Boston. Her literary legacy rests on "Charlotte Temple" as a foundational text of American fiction, reflecting early national themes of virtue, morality, and female experience.
