Stanley G. Weinbaum

Stanley Grauman Weinbaum was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1902. He studied chemical engineering at the University of Wisconsin but turned to writing. His first published story, "A Martian Odyssey" (1934), was an instant sensation in Wonder Stories, praised for its imaginative, non-humanoid alien and its blend of humor and wonder. Weinbaum produced a remarkable body of work in just 18 months before dying of lung cancer in 1935 at age 33. His stories, collected in The Dawn of Flame and Other Stories and other volumes, include the novel The Dark Other (a psychological fantasy) and tales like "The Lotus Eaters" and "Pygmalion's Spectacles." Weinbaum's emphasis on believable alien psychology and biology marked a shift from pulp adventure to more thoughtful science fiction, directly influencing later writers such as Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke.
