Shirley Hazzard

Shirley Hazzard was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1931, and spent much of her youth traveling due to her father’s diplomatic career. She worked for the United Nations in the 1950s, an experience that informed her later nonfiction. Hazzard’s fiction is celebrated for its lyrical precision and exploration of love, fate, and moral complexity. Her novel The Transit of Venus (1980) is widely regarded as a modern classic, earning the National Book Critics Circle Award. Other notable works include The Great Fire (2003), which won the National Book Award for Fiction.
