S. Fowler Wright

Sydney Fowler Wright (1874–1965) was a prolific English writer, poet, and editor whose career spanned journalism, historical fiction, and speculative literature. He is best remembered for his 1929 novel "The World Below," a visionary tale of a future society living beneath the Earth's surface after a global catastrophe. Wright also translated Dante's "Divine Comedy" and wrote numerous other novels, including "Deluge" (1928) and its sequel "Dawn" (1929), which depict a post-apocalyptic England. His work often engaged with themes of evolution, social decay, and human resilience, placing him among early 20th-century pioneers of science fiction. Though never achieving mainstream fame, Wright's imaginative world-building and philosophical depth have earned him a lasting niche among fans of classic speculative fiction.
