Robert W. Service

Robert William Service was born in Preston, England, in 1874 and emigrated to Canada in his early twenties. Working as a bank clerk in Whitehorse and Dawson City during the Klondike Gold Rush, he absorbed the tales and characters that would fuel his poetry. His first collection, "Songs of a Sourdough" (1907), included iconic narrative poems like "The Cremation of Sam McGee" and "The Shooting of Dan McGrew," which captured the rugged spirit of the North. Service published several more volumes of poetry and novels, often blending humor, adventure, and pathos. Though sometimes dismissed as a mere versifier, his work remains widely read for its rhythmic energy and authentic portrayal of frontier life. He spent his later years in France and died in 1958, leaving a legacy as the "Bard of the Yukon."
