Robert W. Chambers

Robert William Chambers was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1865. He studied art in Paris at the Académie Julian, but turned to writing after returning to the United States. His first novel, "In the Quarter" (1894), drew on his Parisian experiences, but it was his second book, "The King in Yellow" (1895), that secured his literary reputation. This collection of linked short stories introduced a fictional play that drives readers to madness, pioneering themes of cosmic dread and forbidden knowledge. Chambers later became a prolific author of popular romances, historical novels, and adventure stories, achieving great commercial success in the early 20th century. Though his later work is largely forgotten, "The King in Yellow" remains a landmark of weird fiction, directly influencing H. P. Lovecraft and the development of the Cthulhu Mythos. Chambers died in 1933.
